Victim Blaming – The Power of Language

The session explores what victim blaming is and the importance of changing the language and attitudes we use for young people and parents.

We look at a number of case studies and think about how we re-write/verbalise reports/conversations to ensure that victim blaming is always avoided.

We will also explore dominant understandings of abused and exploited young people and how this may influence our response to them. Published research conducted by Dr Sarah Lloyd is presented which explores safeguarding professional’s understandings of exploitation outside the home and children’s capacity to make choices.

Dr Sarah Lloyd has extensive experience as an academic researcher in child exploitation, influenced by her early career in youth work and parent support. Sarah is passionate about the importance of family-centered, holistic support for families affected by child exploitation.
